Ralph Lysell (1907-1987) was one of the pioneers of industrial design in Sweden. In the 1940s he ran the consulting company Industriell Formgivning AB in Stockholm, pushing strongly for the use of new ideas from the US with charisma and forcefulness. Lysell himself had lived in the US and, among other things, designed an extremely streamlined car.

His name was Ralph Lysell and today he is considered one of the tue pioneers in Swedish industrial design. Ralph's mother lived with a new man, a man that was not very found of his step-son, so shortly after arriving in the land of opportunities Rolf had to make it on his own. Hi lied about his age, and changed his name into Ralph Lysell in order to integrate better. Lysell was his mother's maiden name.

In the early 1930s the Swedish company Ericsson switched from using sheet metal to form the base and handset of the traditional desk telephone to Bakelite, an early form of plastic. Much development work was required before Blomberg and Lysell's prototype could become a working phone. In the midst of a raging world war, however, there were neither the resources nor the ambition to conduct such a project. Instead, Hugo Blomberg began working for Ericsson in the US in 1942, while Ralph Lysell left the company in 1944.
He moved to the United States at age 16.
